All The Trees Along Granville Street
The Miss Guides: A Cultural Walking Collective (In collaboration with Natalie Doonan and Sean George )
In early December 2008 -- with sights set on the upcoming Vancouver Olympic Games in 2010 -- all the trees along Granville St. were razed to make way for a new rapid transit line from the airport. The remaining tree stumps were immediately covered with inflammatory graffiti, becoming sites for community commentary and political action. A few months later, the stumps were covered over by the City with large orange pylons. This ongoing photographic walk documents these changes. In defiance of a culture that is obsessed with the New, spectral images remind us of what has already been written over.
As the years wore on, these images were uploaded to an interactive interface on our website, where users could watch the “development” unfold as they overlaid months upon months of time passing. Each tree marks a time as well as a place.
