In Relation

In collaboration with Krystle Sivorot

“Yes, it's like the funny story we have heard too often, we still find it funny, but we don't laugh any more.” - Nell, in Samuel Beckett’s Endgame

Using minimal, repetitive gestures, this dance is comprised of 6 vignettes, each exploring a different way of being in relation. 6 rotating fans are employed to toss, swirl and jostle 72 multicoloured balloons around the dancers. A spontaneous interaction of balloons and dancers create other, orbiting relationships. A delightful swirl of 9 balloons rush between a dancer’s legs! Now, space seems crowded with objects; now, empty. The performance’s deadpan tone does not betray a particular reading of the 6 repeated gestures, nor of the many relationships created. At times it is absurdly funny. At times, inexplicably sad. The dancers become a blank screen onto which the viewers project their past experiences - and thus their reading of the “relationship” being performed. I was held like that once. I am frightened by the sound of their boots. This reminds me of my prom in 1992! A soundtrack of noise music, crickets chirping, and sudden silence accompanies the movers (both balloons and people). The final vignette begins with a total blackout. When the lights slowly fade up, the dancers are sitting in the audience with the rest of us, watching the balloons continue their random dance, watching what perhaps was the true performer all along: the wind, the space that connects us all.

About RERUNS:

A reenactment can come from personal or collective memory and can function as a lens through which stories of the past are shifted into present perspective.

Join us at Sunset Terrace for RERUNS, an evening of short theatrical performances. Organized by Kara Hansen and Chad Murray, artists, dancers, and musicians have been invited to reanimate the past, reinterpret preexisting narratives, and to present the conceivable potential of a reenactment.

In order of appearance:
Pascale Theoret-Groulx (ongoing)
The For’er Players (Steven Hubert & Johnny Burgess)
Katherine Somody & Krystle Sivorot
Michel Beaudry
