Katherine Somody is an artist, educator & facilitator. She makes work that investigates our relationship to the land beneath our feet, to time that passes too quickly, to ourselves and our many masks, and to each other as human beings. Through performance, gesture, relational happenings, dance, and ephemeral practices, her work proposes imagined presents, forgotten pasts, and overlooked futures. How can a fleeting attempt to mark this moment suggest an enduring landscape? If we connect words and images with mutlicoloured strings, do we simply end up with a tangled ball of yarn? Interested equally in the possibilities of sincerity and the absurd, her work encompasses both meditations and provocations.
Katherine is based on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations (Vancouver, Canada). Her work has been performed and exhibited in Vancouver, Halifax, New York, and Berlin.
She holds a BA in Art History from the University of British Columbia and an MFA from Cornell University.
